Bedrooms, basements and stairs, with the old carpet hauled away.
Carpet installation is the removal of your old carpet and pad and the stretching, seaming and trimming of new carpet in its place, and Top Notch Floors has done it in Minneapolis homes since 1990. We handle the haul-away too. You come home to a finished room.
Hard surface is everywhere now, but carpet still wins in certain rooms. Bedrooms feel warmer on a January morning. Basements lose the concrete chill. Stairs get safer underfoot. And carpet absorbs sound, which matters in a split-level, a townhome, or any house with kids upstairs.
Fiber decides how the carpet lives. Nylon is the toughest and springs back after furniture and traffic, so it belongs on stairs and in hallways. Polyester is soft and resists stains well, and it costs less, but it mats faster in heavy traffic. Olefin shrugs off moisture and bleach, which makes it a basement fiber. Wool is beautiful, natural and expensive. With kids or pets, get nylon with a solution-dyed stain treatment.
The pad underneath matters as much as the carpet on top. A cheap pad lets the backing flex and the carpet wears out from below, no matter what you spent on it. Eight-pound density is the floor for a bedroom. Stairs need a firmer pad, not a thicker one. In a basement, use a moisture-resistant pad with a moisture barrier.
Most residential carpet is stretch-in. Tack strip goes around the room, the pad is stapled down, and the carpet is power-stretched tight across the floor. Power stretching is what keeps ripples from showing up in year two. Glue-down goes straight to the slab with no pad and is the right method for commercial floors and rolling chairs.
Stairs are their own skill. Every tread and riser gets wrapped or capped, the nap has to run the same direction the whole flight, and each step gets tucked so the edge stays crisp under years of feet. Winders and open sides take longer. It is slow work and it shows immediately when it is rushed.
We pull the old carpet and pad, sweep and inspect the subfloor, replace bad tack strip, and haul everything away. If we find hardwood in good shape under that carpet, we tell you before we cover it back up.
